Batavia 1938 by command of the Dutch Royal Geographical Society K.N.A.G.). A good copy.This revised and enlarged edn. is seldomly found and of great rarity. ¶ Discussion of the 1817 rebellion in the Moluccas and in particular of the events on Saparua, May 16th, when the Resident, J. L. van den Bergh and the dutch population, fled to fortress "Duurstede", were massacred. Author attempts to show that the resident, his great-grandfather, has been falsely blamed for the deteat on Saparua. The causes of the rebellion are analysed by means of an evaluation of earlier publications, with additional information from archival sources. Also a detailed description of the events on Saparua is supplied, mainly based on the memoires of the Resident's son, J.L. van den Berg, the only surviving eyewitness of the massacre. Finalle the suppression of the rebellion in November 1817 is dealt with briefly. (POLMAN, Central Moluccas...op.cit.). Good copy.

Van der Capellen with a commission to explore the socio-economic conditions and the trade situation in the area and to consolidate relations with the local leaders. They were also invited to visit the Governor-General on Banda. pp. 6-40 deal with his visit to Keffing(Kefing on Title!), Gorong, Kataloka and Ondor(March 26-April 10). Many examples are given of adat survivals & of the conflicting stresses arising in a community in a period of change. Very good copy. Geographical and topographical data on the area between Kayeli and Samalagi are provided. Information has been included on population numbers, housing, means of subsistence, spirit houses, bride-price and these prices as a relative measure of wealth, boundary conflicts between the districts of Kayeli and Leliali. ¶ A review of the first law-suit with as plaintinffs, the Ambonese population, represented by the lawyers of the Republic of the South Moluccas, or Republik Maluku Selatan (R.M.S.) vs. the "Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij", K.P.M. being the most relevant documents bearing on the case. The heart of the matter was in fact if the South Moluccas were, in view of the transfer of sovereignty, agreed in december 1949, to the Republic of Indonesia, already an independent state. (the proclamation of independence for the South Moluccas was previously announced). If so, the Royal Steam Packet Navigation Company, K.P.M., liable of collaboration with the Republic Indonesia to overthrow the R.M.S., as there were no other means of transport of Indonesian armed forces to the Moluccas, than by this shipping-company.
